A Century of Compassion and Service
Founded in the early 20th century by Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao and Lady Andal M Venkatasubba Rao.
The Madras Seva Sadan was established as a trailblazing institution dedicated to providing support and succor to the marginalized, with a special focus on the empowerment of women and children.
At a time when India was deeply entrenched in the war for it’s independence, Lady Andal, along with Mrs. Margret Cousins worked tirelessly with the Women’s Indian Association to to fight against illiteracy, child marriage, the devadasi system, and other social ills.
This coleased into The Madras Seva Sadan, with the stepping in of Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao, her illustrious husband, who planted the roots for The Madras Seva Sadan to grow and ultimately beome a beacon of hope for the downtrodden.
The journey began with a simple but powerful mission: to educate. In 1930, The Madras Seva Sadan opened The Madras Seva Sadan Girls School (formally registered in 1936).
Nearly a century later, this institution remains a thriving cornerstone of The Madras Seva Sadan’s legacy, continuing to shape the lives of young women today.
The Madras Seva Sadan has always been a pioneer in responding to societal needs.
In 1942, during a period of global upheaval, answering the Government’s call, they created a safe haven for 80 refugees from Burma, offering them stability and a sense of belonging when they had nowhere else to turn.
The Madras Seva Sadan’s commitment to dignity took a concrete leap forward in 1963 through a landmark partnership with the Government Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk.
At a time when "cured mental patients" faced severe social ostracization, they provided a place for them to stay and thrive. By offering a supportive community and a sense of purpose, The Madras Seva Sadan helped individuals reclaim their lives when their own homes were closed to them.
The spirit of service remains as strong and compassionate today as it was in the 1920s.
Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Madras Seva Sadan reaffirmed it’s commitment to the community by providing completely free education to all children studying in it’s Government Aided schools in Chetpet and Tambaram.
Also, the seed that was planted with the work done by creation of the Women’s Home for Service, came a full circle in 2019, with the creation of “Prem Vihar” – a spacious home, built over 73,000 sq ft, with 3 floors that provides a safe & secure environment for more than 120 children to grow and thrive.
The space has also evolved in an umbrella for other NGO’s and Not-For-Profit groups by providing facilities completely free of cost, as long as the benefits are passed on to the beneficiaries!
Under the current guidance of Mrs. Krithika Kumar Quintal and our dedicated Governing Body, we have reached a new milestone: the creation of the Lady Andal Open School.
This exclusive institution consolidates the pioneering vision of Mrs. C. Prema Kumar, who initiated a movement for diverse learners across all our institutions way back in 1998!
"From a single, rented home in 1923 to a multi-faceted sanctuary today, The Madras Seva Sadan’s history is a living promise to provide a home to the marginalized."
Apart from academic and therapeutic support, children participate in extra and co-curricular activities such as music, sports, art; as well as festivals and celebrations, conducted along with the other schools of The Madras Seva Sadan.
